The American Culinary Federation (ACF) is the country’s largest professional association for chefs, cooks, culinary educators, and professionals in the food service industry. We are dedicated to promoting the culinary profession and furthering our members’ culinary expertise through education, certification, and competitions.
Founded in 1929, the ACF now has more than 25,000 members in over 295 local chapters throughout North America and the Caribbean.
An important objective of the ACF is to expand our members’ culinary skills through education. The ACF’s Educational Institute (ACFEI) provides educational programs and standards of excellence through certification, continuing education, and a three-year apprentice program registered by the U.S. Department of Labor.
The ACF offers the only complete certification program for chefs in the United States. Culinarians are awarded a certificate of professional competence following a rigorous evaluation of experience, education and thorough testing. Since 1963, approximately 9,000 certifications have been awarded at 10 different levels, including Certified Cook, Certified Sous Chef, Certified Chef de Cuisine, Certified Executive Chef, Certified Culinary Educator, and Certified Master Chef – obtainable exclusively through the ACF.
The ACF National Apprenticeship Training Program is available at approximately 100 training facilities and sets the standards for developing future culinarians. Local ACF chapters oversee the three-year culinary and pastry programs that include on-the-job training and mentoring.
The ACF is also the only organization that accredits culinary programs at U.S. schools, colleges and universities. Standards set by the Accrediting Commission are monitored constantly for compliance and accuracy.
Our local chapter works closely with Columbus State Community College’s Apprenticeship Program as well as the Culinary Arts Program at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.
ACF members can take advantage of the many seminars and workshops offered at the annual national conventions and regional conferences, as well as demonstrations and hands-on training at our local monthly meetings.
