The Maple Leaf Farms consumer video recipe contest "Strut Your Duck" was officially launched today.  We are looking for creative duck recipes demonstrated in a short video.  Check out the contest website here:  http://memelabs.com/mapleleaffarmsduck/

To enter, all people need to do is register for the contest, then upload a video along with their recipe. Once the video is approved, they’re officially in the running. After that they should make sure their friends, family and co-workers vote for their video.  The number of votes the video gets will be taken into consideration by our panel of judges.

All videos must be uploaded by August 20.  A panel of judges will chose 10 videos that will go on to round 2.  In Round 2, the ten videos will be cooked and three winners will be chosen by the panel of judges.  Winners will be announced on or around September 16, 2010.  Top prize is $4,000 and duck products for a year.

So notify your friends (sorry, no employees or their immediate families are eligible to enter) and encourage them to enter and "strut their duck!"

The U.S. Collegiate National Championships

Friday & Saturday October 1 -2, 2010

The overall sponsor:  Alpenrose

Fruit and vegetable provided by:  Visser Farms

The City of Holland Michigan has held a vegetable carving competition called The Carve for the past two years at their farmers market.  This year with the help of Alpenrose and Rock On Ice / Art The Experience the event will now be titled  “The U. S. Collegiate National Championships.”  Along with the Collegiate Nationals there will be a High School Division and a People’s Choice competition for professionals and amateurs/students.

Collegiate Nationals:

This competition will be a two or three-man team event that will take place over two days.  Each school will have two carvers compete in the compulsory and two for the singles event; the third teammate will be a helper.  The team event will consist of all three competitors carving.  A cumulative score from all events will be added together in order to determine the Collegiate U.S. National Champion.  The events will consist of the following:

The compulsory event will be announced at the time of registration.  It will be two hours and cover basic carving techniques.  Two of the three-team members will carve in this event as individuals and they may have a third teammate as a helper (helpers role is defined in the rules).  The names of the carvers that compete in this event can be determined when the team registers for the event and finds out the particulars of the compulsory.  The school may choose the best two students based on the compulsory task.

The singles event will be a mystery basket and the sculpture will be displayed on our pedestals that measure 2ft x 2 ft.  All fruit and vegetable for these events will be supplied by the City of Holland.  The student will have three hours to complete their sculpture.  Students may only use toothpicks and skewers to build their displays.  Two of the three-team members will carve in this event as individuals, the third student may be a helper.  Students will be allowed to bring in two items from the following list:

Any type of melon                    /               Pumpkin or squash                 /               Pineapple

The team event will consist of all three competitors working together to carve one large display.  If the school has a two-man team then they may carve with just two for this event.  Each team will have an 8ft table to make their display on and may use any apparatus for structure as long as it is completely covered in fruit.  If the structure is visible during judging there will be deductions.  This event will be 4 hours and 30 minutes long.

The City of Holland will provide each team with:

2 Watermelons        2 Cantaloupes         2 Honeydews           2 Pumpkins (if available)

The team is allowed to bring in any other fruit or vegetable to carve for their display. There is no limitation to the amount of fruit you may bring in.  The entire display must fit on the 8ft table provided.

Entry fee Collegiate Nationals:  $150 per team

People’s Choice Competition is separate from the Collegiate and High school divisions.  Any student, judge, coach or professional may enter this competition.  Carvers will be required to bring in a pre-carved sculpture and it will be set up on a pedestal that measures 2ft x 2 ft. The sculptures will be placed separate from the carving area and will be voted on by the public. You may use any fruit or vegetable for this display.  You may add props to your sculpture as long as the prop does not exceed 20% of the total sculpture (use your best judgment).  You may also use any apparatus as long as it fits on the carving pedestal provided.

Entry Fee People’s Choice:  $30

High School Division will be an individual event with a mystery basket.  Each individual will carve in the compulsory and the singles events that are described in the collegiate nationals division.  They will not compete as a team or in the team event.  Their scores will be accumulated as individuals from both events in order to declare the winner.

Entry fee High school:  $30 per student
